AJ Engineering

AJ Engineering & Construction Services Ltd was established in 1999 and has developed a reputation as one of the region’s foremost steel fabrication, steel erection and cladding specialists. Based in NE Scotland but carry out projects throughout the Highlands and Islands and provide services to major contractors.

The challenge

In 2017, AJ Engineering secured its biggest contract to date with a multi-million-pound windfarm deal, this was to fabricate and install the structural steel and cladding. They decided that they needed to implement something to reduce their employee’s exposure of welding fumes and grinding dust. This project involved mostly indoor work that would be carried out in their workshop. The work involved welding large pieces of metal piping, so they needed to ensure they were able to have a flexible reach and in different areas of the workshop.

The solution

A-mac Environmental supplied and installed a Plymovent MultiDust^® Bank with 6 CART-D filters, this unit has a RamAir^TM filter cleaning system that blasts compressed air to each filter to remove a build-up of dust from the filter and drop down into the unit’s waste bin. The waste bin is simple to remove and empty at the end of the operators shift.

A control panel was installed that has a differential pressure gauge with an alarm to detect when the filters are dirty, and need changed. A centrifugal fan was placed outside, ducted to the filtration unit.

A-mac installed 5 Plymovent KUA-4 extraction arms, secured to an extension boom that was fabricated by AJ Engineering themselves. Each extraction arm has the capability to move in an easy and practical position for the operator to use, extracting all hazardous contaminates during the process.
