There are many health risks associated with the exposure to vehicle exhaust emissions. Every time a vehicle is operating the engine emits tiny fragments of particulate matter and invisible gasses such as carbon monoxide. Often when maintaining or repairing automobiles a mechanic will be required to operate them indoors. When operating a vehicle indoors the exhaust emissions should be removed to prevent exposure of both employees and customers to these tiny fragments and gasses. As an example, extremely high concentrations of carbon monoxide produced by a vehicle’s engine can reach toxic levels within a matter of minutes inside a closed building.
According to International Mechanical Code, IMC Code 502.13 Motor vehicle operation. In areas where motor vehicles operate, mechanical ventilation shall be provided in accordance with Section 403. Additionally, areas in which stationary motor vehicles are operated shall be provided with a source capture system that connects directly to the motor vehicle exhaust systems.
According to the UK government agency Health and Safety Executive (HSE), continued exposure to exhausts emissions can lead to coughing and breathlessness. Long-term repeated exposure over a period of time can even increase the risk of lung cancer. Therefore, it is important to understand that whenever there is a need to run an internal combustion engine vehicle indoors, there is a need for an exhaust extraction system.
As a proven industry leader in vehicle exhaust extraction for fire and emergency services, Plymovent understands the importance of tackling the dangers of vehicle exhausts in your automotive repair and/or service garage. We offer several products that are effective, safe, user-friendly, and regulation-compliant, ensuring you and your employees operate in a healthy working environment.
Our vehicle exhaust systems
FumeCaddie™
A plug-and-play mobile unit that can be connected directly to the vehicle or apparatus exhaust pipe. The fan of the FumeCaddie will remove the fumes from the source and extract them from the building. This vehicle exhaust extraction system is easy-to-use, store and operate in any size workshop and does not need an adapter to do its job.
"The Plymovent FumeCaddie™ is a plug and play vehicle exhaust extraction unit designed to capture exhaust fumes at the source emitted by any vehicle or apparatus running indoors and extract them from the building."
We offer five types of rail systems including the Sliding Balancer Track (SBT), the Straight Rail (STR), the Vertical Stack Rail (VSR), the Mini Rail Profile (MRP), and the Crab Return System (CRS). These rails are designed to offer you flexibility when extracting vehicle exhausts from your garage. Do your work activities require you to have a bigger working range? Our systems can be easily expanded by adding trolleys or additional hose reels.
"Our rail systems provide flexibility for extraction of vehicle exhaust in various applications. The working range of the systems is determined by the length of the rails. Our rail systems allow easy expansion by the addition of trolleys or additional hose reels."
The Single Hose Drop (FE) and the Boom Arm (FEB) are our easy-to-operate and efficient-exhaust-extraction hose drops that remove the toxins from your building. Whereas the Single Hose Drop is preferred for smaller areas with limited space, the Boom Arm is designed to help you cover a wider area.
Additionally, we offer you several hose reels including the Spring-Operated hose reel (SER) and the Motorized Hose Reel (MHR). Both reels should be used for general vehicle application workshops. However, the Spring-Operated hose reel retracts the hose with the assistance of a spring whereas the Motorized Hose Reel does so with the assistance of an electronic motor. Furthermore, Plymovent’s Motorized Hose Reel (MER) and its Motorized Spring-Assisted hose reel (MSHR) should be used for heavier work. Both hose reels retract with an electronic motor and as its name states, the Motorized Spring-Assisted hose reel gets additional help from a spring.
The hose drops together with the hose reels, will help you create a healthier, safer, and more organized workplace in which you do not have to worry about tripping over hoses on the floor.
"The motorized spring-assisted hose reel (MSHR) is designed to retract the hose with an electric motor that is assisted by a spring. We recommend this hose reel for use in light and heavy duty vehicle workshops where hoses are heavier than normal due to high exhaust temperatures, and overhead cranes or lifts are used."
Plymovent offers a wide range of nozzles that are designed for stationary and moving vehicles. All of our nozzles can be positioned either horizontally or vertically on all commonly used exhaust pipes. Connecting and disconnecting our nozzles is an easy and quick job. The metal nozzles are capable of handling high exhaust temperatures and the rubber nozzles include special outlets for emission testing.
"The REG nozzle is fitted with a vice grip to maximize its holding power to the tailpipe."
We provide a wide range of exhaust hoses that, with their varieties of diameters and temperature ratings, are suitable for almost any vehicle. Depending on your application, you can choose between a diverse list of hoses for your garage including flexible hoses that are resistant to chemicals or hoses that have additional protection such as flame-retardant walls. Our experts will help you specify the proper exhaust hose for your garage.
"The Exhaust Gas Hose is used with Plymovent vehicle exhaust systems. Designed to extract hazardous fumes generated by gasoline and diesel engines from cars, motorcycles and light duty trucks."
While all these solutions are different, they all share the same objective: ensuring the safety of you and your employees.
Laws and regulations
The importance of health and safety at work is recognized and shared by many organizations. At Plymovent, we work according to these organizations in order to comply with local regulations and standards.
Fire stations and related public works service facilities can rest assured that Plymovent HT hoses will keep fire fighters and vehicle service personnel safe, and systems remain in good use and functional.
Welders must be protected against hazardous welding fumes. Depending on the welding environment or how and what is welded, welders can be protected by systems for source extraction and general filtration and ventilation. Also, they can be protected by respiratory protective equipment (RPE), such as welding helmets with fresh air supply. Supplied air respirators are known to provide the best all-around protection for the welders themselves
